Why Bloomington Homeowners Choose Belgard Construction
We’re Alder Contractors, and we provide independent Belgard construction service in Bloomington. We install, repair, and rebuild Belgard paver patios, driveways, retaining walls, and walkways across the 92316 ZIP code. What separates our Belgard work from the next contractor’s is simple: we know the base, drainage, and joint failure patterns these specific units exhibit in San Bernardino County’s wind-blown, clay-heavy, 100-degree summers, and we build accordingly. We are not affiliated with or authorized by Belgard. We’re an independent contractor who sources genuine Belgard units through local dealers and installs them to manufacturer spec and county code. That’s how we’ve done it since day one. Call (833) 467-7020 to schedule your free estimate.
Belgard is the hardscape brand Bloomington homeowners keep coming back to, and the reason isn’t complicated. Their Lafitt Rustic Slab pavers hold up to vehicle loads better than most flagstone-style units. Their Cambridge Cobble gives a traditional street look that reads as custom without the custom price. Their Mega-Lafitt wall blocks and Weston Stone retaining systems handle grade changes cleanly. But a paver is only as good as what sits underneath it. That’s the part most Bloomington installs get wrong, and it’s exactly the part we fix.
Why Trust Alder Contractors for Your Belgard Construction?
Nelson Ibarra, our owner, has spent nearly three decades working on Inland Empire homes, from Rialto’s Willow Avenue corridor to the unincorporated pockets of Bloomington. He learned the trade the way it used to be learned: on job sites as a kid with his father, a drywall finisher who brought him along on weekends, then through Chaffey College’s building technology program in Rancho Cucamonga. The technical coursework gave him the structural grounding; the job sites gave him what no classroom can teach. When a Belgard patio fails in Bloomington, it’s rarely the paver’s fault. It’s what the previous installer did or didn’t do underneath.
Our crew tears out and rebuilds failed Belgard work every month. We know what a Cambridge Cobble field looks like when someone skipped the geotextile fabric. We know what a Mega-Lafitt wall looks like when geogrid was never installed. We know what Lafitt Rustic Slab corners do when the Class II base is two inches thick instead of six. That’s not product theory. That’s field reality across Bloomington’s 1950s-to-1970s lots.
When we service Belgard, we stay with genuine Belgard units, caps, and accessories so courses, color, and dimensions match the existing field. We substitute quality aftermarket material only where Belgard doesn’t supply it: the base rock, the geogrid, the polymeric joint sand. The result is a repair that blends with what’s already there, not a patch that announces itself from the street.

Common Belgard Construction Problems We Fix in Bloomington
Here’s what we actually see when we roll up to a Belgard job in this part of the county. It’s rarely the paver failing on its own. It’s the system underneath.
- Lafitt Rustic Slab driveways rocking and chipping. The Lafitt Rustic profile is a large-format slab with a slightly irregular face, and it handles light vehicle traffic well when it’s installed over a compacted Class II base of at least six inches. What we find in Bloomington driveways is the opposite: a thin gravel base, sometimes an inch or two, laid directly over the sandy native soil this area is known for. The units rock under tire load, the edge joints open up, and corners chip. On Valley Boulevard-area properties with pull-through drives, the wear concentrates near the curb line.
- Cambridge Cobble patios with fines pumping up through the joints. Cambridge Cobble is a classic 60mm unit that looks right on older Bloomington ranch homes. But when the installer skips the separation fabric between the native soil and the base, capillary action and foot traffic push fines up through the joints. The surface gets a permanent haze, weeds seed in the joints, and eventually the field undulates like a washboard. We pull these all the time and find no fabric underneath, exactly as suspected.
- Mega-Lafitt retaining walls bulging at the face. Mega-Lafitt is a big block designed for larger walls, and it needs setback and geogrid reinforcement to hold a grade change. On Bloomington lots with unpermitted fill slopes, builders will often stack these blocks straight vertical with no grid. The weight of the soil behind pushes the face out, the top course separates, and you can see the bow from the street. This is a rebuild, not a patch.
- Weston Stone walls with efflorescence and base push-out. Weston Stone is a split-face retaining wall system that drains through the back of the wall or it doesn’t drain at all. Bloomington’s clay-heavy soil holds water, and when a Weston Stone wall gets built without drain gravel behind it and no outlet at the base, hydrostatic pressure pushes the wall outward at the bottom while white mineral blooms climb the face. We fix the drainage first. The wall face comes second.
- Polymeric sand blowing out of joints during Santa Ana season. This is the detail almost no one considers until they live through a Santa Ana wind event. Bloomington gets sustained wind through the fall, and if the polymeric sand was installed before the joints were completely dry, or if the pavers aren’t edge-restrained, the sand activates poorly and blows out in the first season. We re-sand with fresh polymer and install edge restraint so the field stays locked.
Belgard Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
When you call us about a failing Belgard hardscape in Bloomington, the first thing we determine is whether the units themselves are compromised or whether the failure is underneath them. That decision drives everything. If the slab field is sound and the problem is base settlement, drainage, or joint sand, we repair. We lift the affected section, rebuild the base, reset the units, and re-sand. No new pavers needed. If the units are cracked through the body, sunken past a point where re-leveling makes sense, or they’re the wrong profile for the load they’re carrying, we replace. A Lafitt Rustic Slab with corner fractures across half the field is replacement territory. A Cambridge Cobble patio with one low spot and good pavers is a repair.
We keep a local inventory of common Belgard accessories: edge restraint, corner units, caps, and polymeric joint sand rated for this climate. For concrete hardscapes, we use genuine Belgard units, caps, and accessories so the color and profile match. Quality aftermarket base rock, geogrid, and joint sand fill the gaps Belgard doesn’t manufacture. That’s the honest approach: OEM where it matters, proven aftermarket where the brand isn’t the source. Call (833) 467-7020 and we’ll tell you which path your hardscape needs.
Our Belgard Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnosis. We walk the entire hardscape, not just the spot that caught your eye. We check for base failure, drainage problems, edge restraint, and joint condition. On a Bloomington home from the 1960s, we also look for evidence of prior unpermitted additions or conversions that may have changed the grade or the load path. County Land Use Services has a long record in this area, and we’ve learned to read the signs.
- 2
Base correction or demo. If we’re repairing, we saw-cut the affected area, remove the units, and rebuild the Class II road base in lifts. If we’re installing new, we excavate to proper depth, install geotextile fabric, compact in lifts, and screen for grade. In Bloomington’s sandy, wind-blown soil, compaction is non-negotiable.
- 3
Reset, relay, or install Belgard units. Genuine Belgard pavers, caps, and accessories go back in to the manufacturer’s pattern and spec. Edge restraint goes in around the entire perimeter. Joint sand goes in dry, is compacted, then activated.
- 4
Drainage verification. We water-test or grade-check the finished field. On walls, we verify the drain gravel and outlet are doing their job before we backfill.
- 5
Warranty and follow-up. We stand behind our Belgard installations with a written workmanship warranty. If the sand settles or a joint opens in the first season, we come back. That’s the way we’ve always done it. Do it right the first time – the callback always costs more than the extra hour up front.

AfterBelgard Products We Service & Install in Bloomington
We work with the Belgard series Bloomington homeowners actually have in their yards, not just the ones in the catalog. That means Lafitt Rustic Slab pavers on driveways and large patios, Cambridge Cobble in traditional bonded patterns on walkways and patios, Mega-Lafitt retaining walls on steeper grade changes, and Weston Stone retaining walls where a split-face block suits the home’s era. We also service Belgard caps, corner units, edge restraint, and polymeric joint sand across all these lines. We stock common accessories locally so a repair isn’t waiting on a dealer order. If you inherited a Belgard hardscape from a previous owner and don’t know the series, bring us a photo or we’ll come look. We can identify it by the profile, the face texture, and the joint dimensions.
We Also Service These Brands
Belgard is one of the biggest names in the Alder Contractors portfolio, but it’s not the only one. We also work with Techo-Bloc and Unilock hardscape systems, plus KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone countertops, and Kohler plumbing fixtures. If your Bloomington project stretches from the backyard Belgard patio into the kitchen, we handle both under the same contract and the same crew relationship.
FAQs – Belgard Construction Service in Bloomington
Can you match Belgard Lafitt Rustic Slab if only a section of my driveway is cracked?
Yes, in most cases we can match the existing field closely enough that the repair doesn’t stand out. Lafitt Rustic Slab comes in a range of color blends, and because the face is intentionally irregular, a reset section with matching units blends better than on a smooth paver. The bigger variable is whether the base under the cracked section is the real problem. If the base is intact and only a few corners are chipped, we replace individual units. If the base was thin from the start, matching the pavers won’t stop the next crack. Call (833) 467-7020 and we’ll tell you which one you’re dealing with.
Why does my Belgard retaining wall have a bulging face?
A bulging face on a Mega-Lafitt or Weston Stone wall almost always means the wall was built without proper geogrid reinforcement, without enough setback, or without drain gravel and an outlet behind it. Bloomington’s clay soil holds water long after the rain stops, and that trapped water builds pressure against the back of the wall. Over time, the face pushes out and the top course separates. This can’t be patched from the front. The wall has to be disassembled, the drainage corrected, and the blocks reset with proper reinforcement.
Do you install Belgard pavers over existing concrete?
Sometimes we do, but only when the existing concrete slab is in excellent structural condition with no active cracks, no low spots, and no drainage problems. An overlay saves demolition cost and keeps the project moving. But if the concrete underneath is cracked or settling, the Belgard pavers on top will mirror those cracks within a season or two. In Bloomington, where 60-year-old slabs are common and often have unpermitted additions poured over the years, a full demo and rebuild on compacted Class II base is usually the better call. We’ll show you both options and the honest price for each.
What base do you use under Belgard pavers here?
We build on a minimum of six inches of compacted Class II road base over geotextile separation fabric, with a one-inch bedding layer of sand or stone screenings depending on the unit. Bloomington’s native soil is sandy and wind-blown in places, clay-heavy in others, and both materials move with water. The fabric keeps the fines from pumping up into the joints. The compacted base keeps the pavers from shifting under vehicle load and through wet-dry cycles.
Is polymeric sand the right joint fill for Belgard pavers in a windy area?
Yes, but only if it’s installed correctly. Bloomington’s Santa Ana winds will strip conventional masonry sand out of the joints in one season. Polymeric sand activates with water and hardens into a flexible joint that resists wind, weeds, and washout. The catch is that it has to go into a completely dry joint and be activated at the right moisture level. Too much water and it turns to a milky haze. Too little and it never binds. We install polymer joints every week here and know the conditions by heart.
How much does Belgard construction cost in Bloomington?
